Can My HVAC System Use MERV 13?

MERV 13 is not a universal drop-in upgrade. EPA recommends MERV 13, or the highest rating your system fan and filter slot can accommodate. If you are unsure, ask an HVAC technician to check your system before changing filters.

Check the equipment, not just the number

Start with the equipment manual and the filter cabinet's requirements. Match the actual width, height and depth. The filter should fit snugly without being bent or crushed.

Do not assume that a filter is compatible because the nominal label matches. Different manufacturers can use different actual dimensions. Measure the filter you are replacing and compare it with the specifications for the new one.

Ask about airflow

An HVAC technician can determine the highest-efficiency filter your system can use. A MERV number alone does not tell you whether a particular filter will work with your fan, cabinet and duct system.

Keep checking the filter after a change

Follow your equipment and filter maintenance instructions. If you notice an unexpected change in airflow or operation after replacing a filter, have the system checked rather than assuming it is normal.

Choosing a Plusco filter

Plusco offers MERV 8 and MERV 13 filters in 1-, 2- and 4-inch nominal depths. The MERV guide explains the choices. Once you know the size and rating your equipment accepts, use the calculator to compare prices.

For custom dimensions or a facility order, request a quote. Include the actual measurements, required rating and quantity.
